The 5 Stages of "Hey There Delilah" performed by the inspiration for the song, steeplechase runner Delilah DiCrescenzo.
Stage 1: Hey there, can you believe he wrote a song about me? It took a year to write. That's so sweet. I wish he was cuter. I couldn't jump over that nose. Maybe if he was rich? I'm going places with this necklace.
Stage 2: Hey there, I'm flattered, but embarrassed. Thank God it wasn't a big hit or anything. That would've sucked. How'd I take a picture of myself for PEOPLE magazine years before they wrote the article? Weird.
Stage 3: Hey there, I'm tired of hearing this song. It's on all the time and there's parodies like, "Hey There Cicada". It's funny, 'cause like, they changed my name to Cicada. People get paid to be this awful? I'm ignoring it all, 'til it goes away. It's peaked anyway.
Stage 4: Hey there Dammit! #1 on the Billboard charts and appearances on tv shows like Greek!
At least that's on ABC Family. That channel sucks. This sucks. We
met 5 years ago! I can't stand listening to this song anymore! I
can't stop flexing my arms in anger! I'm losing my mind! I'm going to
throw myself off this barrier into the murky water below. Stop saying
"Hey there," to me!
Stage 5: Yeah. Hey there, I'm Delilah. So what? Leave me alone. Go bug Allison Stokke or something. She's still popular right? You know, I'm the one who said "Hey there," first, to him 'cause I wasn't interested. I don't even care. I could be so rich by association right now. Whatever.
According to the internet, "Hey There Delilah" by the Plain White T's was inspired by Delilah DiCrescenzo, a Columbia University graduate, and steeplechase runner training for the 2008 Olympic trials. Songwriter Tom Higgenson and Delilah never dated. In fact, nobody really knows if Tom ever said "Hey there," to Delilah at all. According to Higgenson, "There was never anything between us... I thought she was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. I told her, 'I have a song about you already.' Obviously, there was no song. But I thought it was smooth."
